William J. CrawfordWilliam J. Crawford was admitted to practice in November of 1979. Prior to entering the field of law, Mr. Crawford was a state-licensed contractor, builder, and developer for 15 years. He has been actively engaged in all phases of building, development, construction law and litigation for over 30 years.

Mr. Crawford is an active member of the California Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Construction/Development and Mechanics' Lien Subsection of the Real Property Section of the State Bar and served on the Board of Directors from 1981 to 1983. He is a member of Building Industry Association and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Baldy View Chapter. He serves as legal counsel to the American Subcontractors Association, as well as the Los Angeles/Orange County Chapter, and the Insulation Contractors Association of Southern California. He is also a member of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association, and currently serves as Judge Pro Tem in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. A long standing opponent of the condition precedent or "pay-if-paid" clause in construction contracts, he represented Barsotti's, Inc., one of the prevailing subcontractors in the major Supreme Court decision which ruled the pay if paid provision void, unenforceable and against public policy.

Mr .Crawford has lectured and has written for contractors, subcontractors, developers and lawyers in the State of California on the following topics: "Subcontractor Collection Policy"; "Principles of Collection in the Building Industry"; "Effective Use of the Mechanics' Lien"; "Fundamentals of the Stop Notice and Miller Bond"; "Releases following the Bentz Decision"; "Understanding the Subcontract"; "Effective Claims for Change Orders and Extras".

As a guest speaker and lecturer, Mr. Crawford has been invited to address lenders, developers, materialmen, contractors, subcontractors and various trade associations including: Building Industry Credit Association, Woodworking Institute of California, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association, Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, Painting and Decorating Contractors Association, California State Housing Authority, National Electrical Contractors Association, American Subcontractors Association, The Presley Company, Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association, National Association of Women in Construction, and Carrier Corporation.

Mr. Crawford has advised, structured or set up hundreds of construction industry companies on proper legal procedures to be followed whether they are signing contracts or attempting to collect the money they are owed. Mr. Crawford resides in Ecinitas with his wife, Julie, and in their leisure time they enjoy bicycling together.
